When we got to Utah, we went to the Sunrise Market. While we were there we ran into Mr. Sauki, who was Eisaku’s friend from many years earlier. They knew each other in Bingham Canyon.
We reached Roy, Utah to the home of the Shiki’s. Mr. and Mrs. Shiki are the family that adopted our Sister Sachie when our mother died, so Sachie’s birthday and mother’s death date are the same. The Shiki’s named her Sachie after they took her. Just Mr. Shiki and their son Roy was home. Mrs. Shiki and Sachie were in Nevada for something and were staying there for a while. Mr. Shiki was very nice to us, but we knew we couldn’t stay with them too long because they really didn’t have a very big house. As soon as Mrs. Shiki came back, we knew we couldn’t stay there any longer. I often wondered if we were better off if we stayed with our friend and went with them to the concentration camp. I guess when we wrote to the Shiki’s and asked if we could go there because we were being evacuated, they couldn’t say “no”, so it was a sticky situation and we cannot blame anyone how things turned out. We didn’t know what to do because the Japanese could not get a job anywhere during the war. We didn’t have home or a job. If the government didn’t chase us out, we couldn’t have made a living anyways because nobody bought from us. We were really in a bad situation.
