I don’t remember how much we got paid for helping on the farm, but I guess we were able to pay the hospital bill and feed our family. I don’t know, but we could have brought quite a bit of money from California. It must have been hard for us to live in that tiny house with 3 children, but we lived there throughout the winter.
In the spring, we moved to Rockport, Utah with the help of the Kurumada family. Mr. Kinji Kurumada and his son Joe were farming in Rockport in the summer time and asked us if we would like to farm with them. We knew we couldn’t stay in that tiny house at the Miyagishima’s , so we were glad for the change. We still had our truck, so we moved to Rockport in the spring. The house in Rockport was an old house and had no modern convenience in the house. We didn’t have running water, we had to get our water from a well, from a neighbor’s well, where we put the bucket down, and pulled it up with a rope. We usually took 2 buckets to get our water, which we used for drinking and cooking. There was a ditch running close by, so we used that water for laundry. We had a coal stove for cooking and warming the home. We warmed the water in a large tub on the coal stove, and I had to do the laundry by hand. It was not an easy life.
